Overview of Online Learning and Supportive Student Services

Online learning gives students an option to continue, expand and/or enhance their education. It offers scheduling flexibility, access to new and different courses and opportunities to engage in educational experiences beyond their local community.

Through 21st century teaching using new technologies and learner-centered instructional strategies, online learning has the potential to increase student achievement and better prepare students for college or work.

One key component that contributes to student success are supportive student services including advising, counseling, monitoring of progress and communication with the school and family.

Role of the Local School Counselor

We work closely with counseling and administrative staff at local schools to help facilitate a positive academic outcome for all students enrolling in online learning.

One important role of the enrolling district is to "designate a contact person to help facilitate and monitor the student's academic progress and accumulated credits towards graduation" and verify that the "course or program meets its graduation requirements".¹ Since this is often the local school counselor we have provided you with an overview of how to support online success as a self-paced Moodle course.

Student Registration

When a student registers for a supplemental online course with SOCRATES Online, the school counselor will be notified via email to enter the online registration system, Genius, and verify that the course meets the local school graduation requirements for that specific.

At that time, you can also access the course syllabus if you choose to review the course in detail on the SOCRATES Online Courses page.

There are several steps to both confirm the student information and verify that the course meets the local school graduation standards. Click on the Registration Icon at right to learn more about completing student enrollment information and finalizing the course request process online.
