Welcome to SOCRATES Online Course Enrollment Steps
Registering for SOCRATES Online classes is available on the web using a simple set of steps that students, parents and/or counselors can initiate online.
Step 1: Know or set-up Email accounts (student and parent).
Email is the main method of notification regarding your enrollment status and courses. You and your parents must have your own email accounts that you will use for official school business such as course enrollment and academic notifications. If your parents do not have an email account, please encourage them to set one up using Googlemail. If you need assistance, please contact James Montz. We do not advise you to continue until you have both email addresses available.
Step 2: Review Considerations for Enrolling in Online Learning.
Carefully think about making the commitment to enroll in an online learning course by reviewing the expectations for student participation, parental or guardian support and technical requirements by reading the information linked below:
Student and Family Handbook (PDF)
Expectations for Online LearningIn the online registration system, you will be asked to confirm that you have reviewed this information.
Step 3: Meet with your High School Counselor.
In this meeting, you will discuss your academic schedule and confirm that the online course you are interested in will apply to your plan for graduation at your school.
Step 4: Review the Online Courses Available through SOCRATES Online.
There are courses scheduled throughout the year that are listed as year-long or fall or spring semester classes.
Step 5: Log in to the Registration System.
New students: If you are a new student to SOCRATES Online you, or you and your counselor, will create an account in the GENIUS online registration. Go to http://genius.socratesonline.org and find the “New to Socrates Online?” section and “Click here” to begin the registration for your new account in GENIUS. After creating your account, your “login” or username will be your email address [new students only] and the password you chose during account creation.
Returning students: If you are a returning SOCRATES Online student from 2010–11, enter the GENIUS registration system using your login, which is the same as your Moodle login from 2010–11. You have been reassigned a password so click on the “Forgot the password” link on the GENIUS homepage to receive a new password by email. When you receive your password, you can change it to your preferred password in the “Edit Account” area of the website.
Step 6: Request a Course using the Link within GENIUS.
The “Request Courses” tab will allow you to find your course and request registration. You will need to “Request New Course” for each online course that requests registration. Be sure to check that you have discussed enrollment with your counselor and understand the expectations of the program, then initial and click “save”. Once a course is selected or saved, an email will be sent to both your parent or guardian and your local school counselor. They will need to respond online to your requested course registration.
Step 7: Course Authorizations.
Parent: Your parent or guardian will receive an email notification of your intent to enroll, along with a separate login and password, and they must log in to GENIUS using these codes to affirm that they understand expectations of the online program in which you have requested enrollment.
Counselor: The counselor will receive an email notification that you have requested enrollment in an online course. The counselor must log in to GENIUS to provide additional information (e.g., your student MARSS number) and verify that the course fits into your schedule and meets the school's graduation requirements.
Step 8: Finalized Registration.
After the requested course(s) are affirmed online by your parent and verified online by your counselor, SOCRATES Online will finalize your registration and notify all parties of your enrollment status. Everyone (your counselor, your parent and you) will all be sent an automatic email confirming that your enrollment in the course is complete.
Step 9: Starting the Course.
Two to three weeks prior to the start of the online term, you will receive an email with log in instructions on how to get started with your online course. If the registration occurs less than three weeks before the start of the term, you will receive this email as soon as all notifications and authorizations have been received.
